With a rented Fiat and the excitement of traveling internationally again, we saw all the sights while in Mallorca. Continuing through the mountain side, we visited Cala Deià, Son Marroig Manor and the town of Valldemossa before a quick half-day trip in Palma.Continuing right along, days 2, 3 and 4 were packed with exploring the area around Deià, our home base on the mountain side of Mallorca. If you missed our first day on the island, click here to get caught up. We managed to get up early enough to enjoy breakfast before driving the short distance over to Cala Deià. The road down to beach was a switchback and pretty tight, even in a Fiat. We were glad we went early because not only was the parking lot still available, the road was empty going down. On the way back up, a different story... We grabbed a spot on the rock-filled beach and enjoyed the calmness. In our opinions, it was still too cold to get in the water but others were swimming around the bay. There is a very popular restaurant on the cliff side (you can see it on left side of the previous photo) but for whatever reason, they were not open that day. There were a lot of confused and annoyed tourists, which I can understand, especially if you weren’t staying in Deià and made the drive specifically for this lunch spot. We dipped our toes in the water and walked along the cliff to get some pics. A lovely American took a photo for us and shortly after, we decided we were ready to head over to Son Marroig Manor. The Marroig Estate dates back to the 15th century and it's just a beautiful property with vistas of the Balearic Sea. You can tour the house (once owned by an Austrian Archduke) and walk around the gardens, filled with olive trees and so much cacti. The big ticket item is the marble pavilion, lots of weddings take place in front of it. The Manor was right up the road from Deià so we were glad we went and visited. While gorgeous, I wouldn't recommend it if you weren't already going to be in the area. Valldemossa was our last must visit town in the mountain region. The general consensus was to get there early due to limited parking. From Deià, Valldemossa was a 20-25 minute drive (depending on how many clusters of cyclists there were along the way). We were able to park in the main town parking area and if I remember right, you had to use Euro bills to pay to park. Luckily, we had some one hand. We went straight to Ca’n Molinas for their famous ensaïmadas and a cup of coffee. After, we walked around the narrow streets, strolled through several parks, toured Chopin’s winter apartment and sat on a bench along the main drive taking in our last full day in the mountains. Mallorca is really just a beautiful place. After we checked out of our hotel and left Deià, we had to drive through Palma to get over to our next destination. We decided to make a pitstop in the capital city for some coffee and lunch at Mistral Coffee House as well as see the Santa María cathedral. The mountain region was rather populated but Palma just felt very crowded. Cruise ships make a stop here so that could be why it felt extra busy. The city was beautiful and the cathedral was massive. We were glad we stopped but also glad we hadn't planned any over-nights there. After a few hours of wondering around, we got the rental and took off to the east side of Mallorca to enjoy three days on the beaches.
Until Next Time, C+D
