During one of our free days on Hamilton island, we booked a tour and spent the afternoon on Whitehaven beach. If Whitehaven beach seemed unfamiliar, hopefully the cover photo helped ring some bells. Whitehaven beach is the long stretch of sand behind the famous Hill Inlet located on in the Whitsundays. Similar (kind of) to the Bahamas, the Whitsundays are some 75 islands speckled around just off the northeastern coast of Australia. Most are uninhabited and Whitsunday island is the most extravagant boasting Whitehaven beach and at the very top, Hill Inlet where the silica sand and shallow water mix together to create swirls of teal and white perfection. We booked a helicopter tour because it is the fastest way to get there, not to mention seeing hill inlet from the sky is the absolute best way to take in its beauty. Our group of six was too large to fly together so we had to take two small helicopters to the island. The larger, more traditional helicopters aren't allowed to land on the beach because they will disrupt and harm the protected plants and sand. So we gladly split into two groups of three and headed to the island. We flew over Hamilton island and made our way to Whitsunday and Cumberland islands. We approached Whitehaven from the south so we saw hill inlet from a distance and then did a nice figure eight around the area to allow everyone in the helicopter a direct view of the swirls from their window. We then flew back to the beach and the pilots put the helicopters in the central part of the 5 mile stretch of sand. We saw some boats and seaplanes down at the end closer to Haslewood island but there was no one within 2 miles of us. Once the pilots got everything situated with the aircrafts, they put out some umbrellas and beach blankets, champagne and fruit, and a cheese spread for us to enjoy. They told us we had about 2 hours to enjoy the beach and then they took off into the woods with their books. We swam, popped the champagne, ate some cheese and fruit, and couldn't stop smiling! The sand was silica based and the most white we'd ever seen. It didn't really squish between your toes but it wasn't hard or hot either. The water was clear and the waves were mild. It was a perfect two hours with some pretty spectacular people! Like clockwork, our lovely pilots came back and we started packing up our things. We hopped into the helicopters and headed back to Hamilton island's airport. On our return flight, we flew side by side with our friends and it felt like a scene from Jurassic park! We could not recommend Hamilton Island Air more! They were easy to book with, we received confirmation immediately, they had no problem accommodating our large group, their location was easy to get to, our pilots were really wonderful, etc! Such a fantastic experience all around.
Until Next Time, C + D
