At times, we come home from a trip and feel like we need another vacation to recover from the one we just took. The driving (or flying hassles with layovers and connections), the lack of sleep, the waking early to get up and go so you don't miss a thing thing. Other times we come home and feel so completely recharged, tanned and bursting with vitamin D that we are ready to tackle the stresses of everyday life anew. Regardless of a jam packed experience or a lounging on the beach vacation, both are fulfilling and have great benefits depending on how you want to travel. Active vacations result in seeing everything there is, cramming each day with activities and places to visit. In the end, these trips can feel draining but so rewarding. We always want to leave a destination feeling like we saw all the major highlights and took in the city as much as we could. These tend to leave longer lasting memories, better stories and impressions on you as a person, but at a price of nearing utter exhaustion. When we went to Iceland, we didn't sleep for the first 40 some hours of the trip but we saw so much of that beautiful country instead of catching z's. The "we'll sleep when we're dead" mentality has become our traveling mantra over the few active vacations we've taken. Relaxing vacations usually have less travel time, consist of fewer activities and in the end feel calming and restful. Some of our favorite relaxing vacations have been all-inclusive trips where finding a new place to eat or having an agenda isn't necessary and allows every day to be stress-free. Though the days tend to blur together and the hours of wave watching leave less to write home about, the ability to be still, calm and composed is always a welcome change of pace for us. If you haven't tried it, then it might not make sense, but leaving the comforts of home can be more comforting than any stay-cation. It's only when you physically leave your worries, that you can mentally separate from the concerns of your day to day. Most of our extreme cases for active vs. relaxed have been international but we have had domestic vacations that have been on both sides of the spectrum. Our Vegas trip was extremely active. We got up early every morning to buy tickets for shows and our evenings went into the wee morning hours. We also drove, so traveling to and from was exhausting in itself. On the flip side, we've taken weekend trips to cities nearby like San Antonio and Fredericksburg (Texas's wine country) and those long weekends were relaxing and overall stress-free. Sometimes, just getting 2 hours away can be enough to leave the work life out of the vacation.
This choice between an active venture and a relaxing one is something we take into consideration every time we decide to travel. The differences are vast, the experiences nearly opposite in nature, but each is worth the ticket in their own way. Until next time, C & D
