We put our smartphones to work when it comes to travel. Want to find great airfare rates, a hotel with a view, and an awesome bar with local brew? There, certainly is, an app for that!Deciding to travel or plan for a vacation usually results in a lot of research. "Where's the best sushi restaurant in town?" " What's the fastest way to get from A to B?" "What neighborhood has the best nightlife?" Sometimes, the questions and researching can be endless. So, to save some time and energy, we've compiled a list of some great apps that might make answering some of your travel/planning questions go a little quicker. Pre-Traveling Apps: TripAdvisor - We've discussed our love affair with TripAdvisor before, but it really is a great resource for rankings on hotels, city attractions, and restaurants. User reviews and photos are also posted to give you an idea of the overall experience. Hopper - A flight price app, Hopper analyzes your upcoming flight itinerary and tells you if you should buy or wait it out for a better price to come in the future weeks. We like to upload our travel dates in months in advance and set alerts so we can get the best price available! Travel Butler - A packing app that is so much more! Once you put in your city and dates, Travel Butler shows you the projected weather, activities and attractions popular in the city, popular restaurants and bars to visit, oh and a packing list too! The design of this website is really sleek and easy to use! They also have presets you can adjust for your "always items" to be filtered into any packing list you create. LoungeBuddy - This is an app that we've known about for a while but haven't used it yet. We're planning on trying it out for our upcoming trip to Australia because having access to a first class lounge while waiting to board a 15 hour flight will be a lot more relaxing. LoungeBuddy offers insight into airport lounges that are available to us commoners who don't have a first class ticket. The app analyzes the airport you're in and shows your pictures, amenities, and traveler reviews before you pay to go in! While Traveling Apps: CityMaps2Go/CityMapper - Both of the apps help you get around the city but in different ways! CityMaps2Go is a resource that allows you to download city maps offline to save you roaming and data charges. CityMapper is a transit app. It allows you to see subway, ferry, and bus routes around the city. It also tells you when the next bus, boat, or train will be arriving. We've used CityMapper in a couple different cities and it worked seamlessly. CityMaps2Go was used by a friend of ours in Iceland and it was a wonderful resource for our road trip around the countryside. Above: CityMaps2Go -- Below: CityMapper Speak & Translate - If you are headed to a country that doesn't speak you're native tongue, it's always nice to learn a few common phrases to make it a little easier to get around. However, learning a whole new language takes some time and might not be feasible so having a translator app can come in handy. This app's free version has 42 different languages and the spoken translation can be slowed down and said in a male or female voice. Fancy Tips - This is more than just a tip calculator. Fancy Tips is also a handy tipping guide for over 150 countries that tells you the tipping courtesies for restaurants, taxis, hotels, etc. And because it has a tip calculator, it auto fills your city and factors in tip from your bill total. You can also split the bill with up to 5 people. Sit or Squat - An app that is now sponsored by Charmin, allows you to search for public restrooms near you. You can rank (would you sit or squat?) and review the bathroom so other users can compare it to nearby options. The app also has filter options like if it's free to use, has handicap necessities, and/or baby changing tables. Viator - Everyone knows we love TripAdvisor so there's no surprise that we love the next thing from them, Viator. It's an amazing resource for tours and attractions available in the city you're currently in. Usually, we do all our tour bookings before we leave for vacation but sometimes it's good to have a backup plan, in case of rain or unexpected cancellations. Viator has day of booking options as well as their popular "skip the line" access for touristy attractions like the Empire State Building, etc. Photo Editing - Shifting into photography and editing (because, when traveling, we all take pictures and want to share them with the world) we are Lightroom users. Lightroom has a wonderful app and allows you to sync photos to all your devices as well as your iCloud BUT it costs $10 a month (that covers the mobile Lightroom and Photoshop). So if you're looking for a cheaper option, I love using VSCO. It actually functions similarly to the desktop version of Lightroom, which we already us for editing, and it's free! VSCO has some preset filters that focus on the classic hues without over exposing as well as several adjustment tools.
