If we've learned one thing from traveling, it's the power of the shared experience. If you're in awe, they are probably in awe too! Thanks to the power of these experiences, we've made friends when we didn't expect to and we are so grateful for them!It kinda makes sense when you start to think about it. When you encounter something new, you usually remember every detail of the experience. And who you were with is one of those details not typically forgotten. We've been so fortunate to have met some awesome people along the way. And our memories are that much sweeter because of them.
Tour Groups: Our first big international trip was to South America for 10 days with a tour groups. During that trip, we went from Rio de Janeiro to Iguazu Fall to Buenos Aires. Those flights, bus trips, and city tours bonded several of us. We spent a lot of time with that group and from it we have a smaller travel group (who are in the Maldives right now... Hey guys! Bummed we couldn't join) that we experienced Iceland with last year. Chase and I are so content to have each other that we didn't plan on meeting new people and creating lifelong connections. It's one of those things that when you look back on your vacation, their faces pop into your head. Our meals together, being stuck in an airport for 8 hours, walking through Iguazu falls, scaling ice walls... They are as much apart of those memories as the activities themselves. When Chase and I were talking about this post, Chase reflected on a conversation with Roger, a friend we met in South America. We were at the Falls in Brazil and he leaned over to us and said, "How are we going to explain this to our family back home? I don't think words can describe this." Those moments cement people together unlike anything else. We might not ever see Roger again but he'll always be in our memories (and some of our pictures) from that trip. AirBnB: A hotel-like sharing service was the last place we expected to meet new friends but that's the cool thing about traveling, friendships are formed in the weirdest ways. We had our first AirBnB experience in Portland and our house host was Oliver. He was a wonderful German-American who rented us his apartment basement for a week. He could have simply given us the rules and restrictions list and called it a day. Instead, he offered to pick us up from the airport, drive us wherever we wanted and on top of that, he gave us a mini Portlandia tour of some of the famous places at which they film. He had the mini fridge stocked with our favorite beer types and texted me daily to make sure everything was going smoothly. He always had restaurant options and ideas for things to keep our itinerary full. Portland was full of memories but Oliver's home and hospitality made our trip so special. We are so grateful for our friends and the relationships we've gained along the way. Some of these relationships will be contained to the one adventure we shared, others we're convinced will be lifelong companions. We feel like we're just getting started and can't wait to meet more travel obsessed people on our next adventure! Until Next Time, C + D
