"Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world." -Gustave Flaubert While I was thinking about topics and ideas for this perspective piece, I kept going back to the moments where I've stood amidst greatness and found myself becoming this puny human. All my worries, fears, life goals, and ambitions melted away. All of my needs and wants were no longer important or even relevant. It's during those experiences that everything appeared calm and clear.
Think back, can you recall an experience that someone asked you about? You pause to gather your thoughts but you suddenly realize it's impossible to describe and there is no photo on earth that could do it justice. You're surrounded by the wonders that God created and that awestruck feeling really takes ahold and you're left just observing the view. I love the quote from Flaubert because it reinforces the idea that through travel, whether near or far, new experiences put life into perspective. Sometimes we fall into this everyday, ordinary life trap. Weekly agendas, office politics, reruns and leftovers... It becomes significant. But when you escape it, even for just a brief moment, life becomes this sweet thing again. There's this wonderful little sign at the Grand Canyon that simply reads "One minute- don't read, don't talk, no photos. Just look... and see." It's begging you to put aside everything and just observe. Just see what's out in front of you. It might just amaze you. Until Next Time, C + D
