For some of our readers that follow our personal accounts, you might be more aware that this perspective was sparked by our most recent visit to our home state of Indiana. Long story short, our flight was canceled and delayed us returning home to Austin by 24 hours. Although we were upset and knew it would cause a lot of conflict with our work schedules, we managed to make that extra day a positive one by spending time with some friends and enjoying our hometown a little more. Like so many other issues that arise when you're on vacation, how you respond to it can make or break that trip. When we decided to make this travel perspective about a negative situation we got to talking and realized that travel disappointments happen. Sometimes they can be our own fault, like not allowing enough time between flights to make the connection. Other times, it can be outside of our control, like when it rains the day we had planned an outside activity. -excuse me while I hum Alanis Morissette's Ironic for a sec- Anyway, life happens, it doesn't care if you're on vacation. And when we've been met with disappointing situations, we've tried to make it work for us. Below are a couple of our favorite stories from disappointing circumstances: When I was in college, my concert choir went on tour to the Northeast. One of our stops with in Washington D.C. and our choir director had planned a walking tour all over the nation's Capital to see every monument and important building along the way. Well, unfortunately for us, the weather gods had their own plans and decided it needed to rain! It was coming down the entire time we were walking around the monuments and not just sprinkle showers... Full on down pour and at one point the umbrellas we were using were completely useless because they had flipped inside out and broken thanks to the wind gusts. Hours later, we returned to our sleeping quarters completely soaked. But you know what, we saw every monument and government building around the national mall as well as the Arlington National Cemetery and I'm so thankful for those memories, regardless of the rain and soaking wet denim! One of Chase's favorite disappointed memories is when we were in Iceland. When our travel buddies invited us along, we immediately began researching how to photograph the Aurora Borealis appearance. We were so excited to have a chance to see them. Some people spend winter after winter waiting to see the Northern lights so we were hoping luck would be on our side during our week in Iceland. When we got there, we learned that the sky was polluted with volcanic ash from an eruption that happened the week prior. Every day was overcast and gloomy. At night, the clouds would roll away for just a bit that we could see the stars but not clear enough to see the northern lights. On our last night in Iceland, our tour guide told us he'd take us away from the city's brightness for a shot at seeing the lights. We spent a good 3 hours in the Icelandic countryside, staring up at the sky trying to see any activity. And unfortunately, nothing was spotted by the human eye. We were all extremely disappointed but not Chase. He spent every minute standing in the cold looking up in awe of the millions of stars over head. We were all hoping for the lights... Chase was able to look past it and still enjoy the amazement of a sky unlike anything we'd ever seen before. Delays and hiccups while vacationing can be a common occurrence. Missing out on something you had hoped to experience can be a huge let down. You had waited months for (insert exciting travel experience) and now the airline company has decided to go on strike, delaying you six hours (this really happened). But if you can make the most of it, some might say "seize the day" it can turn an annoying happenstance into a memory you truly cherish.
Until Next Time, C + D
