When it comes to Italy, it's hard to see everything in one trip. Most pre-packaged tours will include 2, maybe 3 regions of the county. Leaving you to decide which areas to see and which to skip. So we formulated a rough draft of what our ideal trip to Italia would look like.Chase and I have wanted to venture to Italy for awhile now. The cliffside cities, the rich culture and history, the food! But every time we looked at a packaged tour, it would only include a couple days in maybe 3 major cities. Rome was always on the list but after that, you had to pick between Florence or Venice. Maybe it would include Milan but not Naples. What about Capri or the Amalfi coast? Or Sicily! So we decided to come up with our own Italian dream itinerary. Realistically, it's probably a little long and hasn't been fine-tuned but it's a start! Venice Most tour companies and visitors fly into Rome because 1. they have cheap flight options and 2. the central location of Rome makes it easy to get anywhere else in the country. Location can't be changed but after some comparing, we noticed that Venice has a large quantity of flight options at very similar price points to Rome. And because Venice is at the top of Italy, it made sense to us to start there and then work our way down the coast. We imagine staying in Venice for roughly 3 full days before heading elsewhere. Florence - Pisa - Cinque Terre Ideally, we'd love to rent a car and do some day trips while in Florence. However, we've heard that driving in Italy is a little dangerous because of the road systems and locals in general. So we're still trying to figure that out but it seems driving or the train are convenient options for travelers. Cinque Terre is a beautiful coastal region that's been made famous in the last decade, maybe because of it's proximity to Pisa. We are planning to take a day trip to Pisa and we've read that the train station in town has a connecting train to Cinque Terre. Depending on which village you go to, tickets can be 10-20€ and about 2 hours of travel. Seems pretty worth it in you're already in the area. Rome Still considering our options, the eurail Italy has a couple high speed options from Florence into Rome. So whether we fly, drive, or ride the rail, arriving in Rome will be nothing short of busy days and tourist highlights. The Colosseum, Vatican City, Trevi Fountain, Michelangelo's masterpieces. There's a reason Rome is apart of all the tour packages for Italy! Most visitors staying in Rome for 3 days and we'd probably stick to that time line, with maybe one additional day if we could allow for it. Naples Leaving Rome via the rail system would get us to Naples in 1 hour. After a few jam packed days in the capital, unwinding by the sea in Napoli sounded just right! We added a stop here for a couple reasons, the most important being that it's the center for ferry travel. While researching, we discovered the "Amalfi coast" is incredibly spread out, so having a ferry system that connects you quickly made Naples a key city for us. The plan is to stay in Naples for 4 days and take day trips to the islands and Amalfi Coast towns. Capri - Positano - Amalfi Taking a morning ferry from Naples, which costs 10€ and about 45 minutes, you can reach the island of Capri. Many people recommend staying in Capri and exploring the island but from there, Capri connects you to the cliffside cities of Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi, etc. While many people rave about the islands, others prefer the coastal towns where they can walk down to the beach and sun-bath for an afternoon. As of right now, we're planning on multiple day trips to see as much as we can. Sicily Taking a plane from Naples, Sicily is our final destination in Italy. At the toe of the boot, Sicily's capital, Palermo is filled with museums, beaches, and pizza! Sicily is a spot we'd really love to visit but considering the trip is already closing in on 14-15 days, this might be the one destination that could get cut from the final itinerary. We'll see! If you've visited Italy, let us know your favorites. Did you feel you had enough time in the major cities? Would there be anything you'd skip?
Until Next Time, C + D
