With most of the US under a blanket of snow and ice, beach vacations have been popping up all over for you Northerners to escape the cold. Although we are located in Texas, we have been dreaming about sandy beaches and rolling waves and thought a summary of the best beaches we’ve been to/dreamed about would be the perfect fantasy getaway. We’ve been very fortunate in that we have traveled to some remarkable beaches and islands over the years. With our actual experiences and some day-dreaming thrown in there, we’ve compiled a list for the best beach getaways complete with a picture for you to drool over and some facts if you plan on traveling there. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach - The Big Island, Hawaii Thanks to the volcanic activity, Punalu'u is covered in jet black sand and is the most famous black sand beach in Hawaii. About 27 miles from Honalulu, this beach tends to be a day trip excursion due to the rough waves that make swimming difficult. Tourists and locals have been known to picnic, dip there toes in the water, and spot the endangered green turtles that nest along the beach. With the turtles so close, snorkeling is popular even with the rough tide. Boat tours are available and locals say this is the best way to get into the water. Grace Bay - Providenciales, Turks and Caicos If you’ve been following along with our blog this year, you know that Grace Bay is a biased choice! We honeymooned there back in 2011 and still can’t get over how beautiful Provo was! BUT there is a reason we added this to our best beaches list and that is because Grace Bay still remains one of the world’s best beaches, second best beach to be exact. You can say we are biased but … second best beach in the world? and it’s in the Caribbean? You're just a short plane ride away from the white sand, clear water, and remote feeling of paradise. If you plan to venture there, remember that most of the hotels aren’t all-inclusive but if you stay along Grace Bay, the cheapest option will probably still have amazing views of the ocean and you’ll be close to the main downtown area which has a huge grocery store and lots of shops. Our hotel was on the opposite end of the island, farthest away from town and it still only took about 10 minutes to get there via mo-ped. They say "year-round" is the best time to travel to Grace Bay, but the summer months get hot, hot, hot! Tulum, Mexico There was Canćun, then Playa del Carmen swooped in for its moment in the sun and now we have Tulum. Also located on the Yucatán peninsula, Tulum is slightly farther south from Canćun and Playa but boasts the same amazing white sands and turquoise colored water. Something that makes Tulum unique from other Mexican coastal cities are the cliffside ruins that captivate the landscape. As one of the final occupied Mayan cities, it hosts the ruins of El Castillo and El Templo De Vientos as well as being close enough to the famous Chichén Itzá to make a day trip out of visiting the Mayan pyramid. Tulum is flush with the expected variety of all-inclusive hotels that you can go for luxury or affordability without sacrificing the surf and sand. Ipanema Beach - Rio de Janeiro When we were planning our trip to Rio we were excited for the prospects of exploring the city and having a beach right there to enjoy as well. When we arrived in Brazil, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the sea, the expanse of the city and the way the mountains positioned themselves right in between. Our hotel was on Copacabana beach which is the largest and most populated but we fell in love with Ipanema beach, just a couple miles down the coast. Some of the best shopping, bistros, and hotels are located across the street from the mosaic tiles that welcome the beach goers. A stretch of gorgeous white sand spotted with coconut vendors and Cariocas kicking soccer balls around, Ipanema sits in the shadow of the two brothers mountain formation. The sun setting behind these peaks while enjoying a churro or fresh açaí juice from a nearby kiosk, embodies why it's so perfect to have a metropolis right on the water. Whitehaven Beach - Whitsunday Islands Just off the coast of Queensland, Australia, the 74 Whitsunday islands are some of the most popular yachting destinations in the world, specifically, Whitehaven beach and Hill Inlet. Due to its unspoiled nature, there are no hotels on Whitehaven so most visitors have to book sailing charters from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island to experience the swirled white silica sand and crystal clear water. Another way visitors get there is from the Great Barrier Reef. Could there be a better excursion? Swimming and snorkeling at the GBR and then sailing to Whitehaven beach to wade in the warm, shallow water... That's it. We're booking our trip now! If there is an island you are ready to escape to, tell us about it below!
Until Next Time, C + D
