Last July, we took some serious time off from our regularly scheduled posts and wrote about our lovely city, Austin, TX. We shared our favorite places to hang out, eat, and explore here in Austin and really enjoyed showcasing our home base. So, we decided we wanted to do that again, but a little bigger this time... Texas sized!Texas has been our home for nearly 6 years (wow, really?? Time flies) and not that I have to tell you, but Texas is a great big state with several thriving cities. Living in Austin puts us pretty central in the state; we're 3 hours from Dallas and Houston, just under 4 hours from the gulf coast and only 90 minutes from San Antonio. During our road trips to Las Vegas, New Mexico and New Orleans, we've driven across the entire state, east to west... Not all at once, that's just crazy! In the coming weeks, we'll be talking about wine and quaint BnB's in the Hill Country, the Alamo and river walk in San An, and our glamping experience, only 20 minutes from Austin, in Elgin/Bastrop. But today, we thought we'd start with our latest adventure a little over an hour north of us. I'm quite sure you've heard of the place... A little market in Waco called Magnolia. Waco, TX was (well, still kind of is) a sleepy college town right off of I-35 that many central Texans pass through on their way to Dallas/Fort Worth. We always knew we had reached Waco once we saw Baylor University off to the East of the interstate. BU was really the only landmark in Waco. That was, until the Gaines family rebranded the town with their rustic, country charm. If you've been living under a rock, or happen to not like HGTV, Chip and Joanna Gaines are the masterminds behind a show called Fixer Upper. They take run down homes (in Waco, there's a plethora) and, well you guessed it, fix them up! They started with a small decor market in town but closed it to focus more on the construction part of their business. Then the show came along and now the market has been moved to a larger space to accommodate all the smaller businesses they continue to add at the Silos. When we went in April, the Magnolia Silos grounds had the market, along with several food trucks, picnic tables, swings and a playground for the kids as well as the big AstroTurf area for yard games and basking in the Texas sun. In the back corner is the Magnolia Garden, where they are growing herbs, veggies, and flowers. The seed shop hadn't opened yet but they were gearing up for that the following month (I believe it's opened since our visit). They also had a few goats lounging around... picture below!! After exploring the grounds, shopping and swinging, we enjoyed some lemonade out on the yard. We took advantage of an empty board and played a round of corn hole before we eventually took off to the other side of town to see the original shop on Bosque Blvd. and grab a late lunch at Schmaltz's sandwich shop. The Magnolia Silos just continue to grow. In the last two months, they've redone the entry with some limestone pavers and more AstroTurf, added more shade and seating by building a barn complete with salvaged 150 year old beams, and opened a bakery! Whether you're a fan of the Gaines or Fixer Upper or just enjoy decorating, Magnolia Market is an adorable place. Their shop alone was filled with gorgeous decor for any home. Chase and I tend to not be rustic or country in our home furnishings but even we found several pieces we wanted to bring back to Austin. With the continued growth out at the silos, I can't wait for friends to visit so we can take another day trip up north and check out the new additions!
Until Next Time, C + D
