Sydney was the first, of four, stops during our 16 day trip in Australia. During our jam packed time there, we delegated some R and R at Bondi and Manly beach.Sydney, Australia! A city known for its Harbor, its surf, and its tan, buff locals. Oh yeah, and the LONG plane ride there! Even though it was a grueling 16 hours crammed in economy, plus the two hours we sat on the tarmac in LAX waiting for the cargo weight to be distributed, the time we spent in Australia was amazing. The city was beautiful, the metro was convenient, the people were beyond friendly... the list could go on. We kinda fell in love! Because our trip to Australia was so busy (and there's so much we want to share with you guys), we decided to break down the posts a little further than just cities we visited. This way, the posts will be smaller and easier to digest (our original draft for Sydney contained 45 pictures... because you have all day to read our blog, right?). We're starting with two days worth of sand and sun on Bondi and Manly Beach. We landed on Saturday morning and decided after all the traveling, we needed to sit and relax. Where better than the cool, city adjacent Bondi Beach? The area was mixed with surfers/locals hitting the water as well as tourists watching from shore and along the cliffs overlooking the Icebergs Swimming pool. After some photos along the many hillside vantage points, we headed down to town for a late lunch and some coffee. Then, we spent some time on the beach before the sun set. If you can see in that last picture with the surfers, there are people standing on the top of the cliff. There is a walking trail that guides you up there and then down the coast from Bondi to Coogee beach. It takes roughly 2 hours to walk with parks and restrooms along the way. We didn't have enough daylight or energy to walk it but we ventured to the top of the first fjord on Tamarama for some scenic views before catching the bus back to Sydney. Two days later, we spent some time on another popular beach, Manly. Because of its north Sydney location, Manly is more like a day trip. By ferry, it takes about 30 minutes, unless you pay more and take the express (18 minute ride). From our Darlinghurst apartment, we took the subway into the Quay to board a mid-morning ferry out to the bustling town of Manly. Side note: if you don't take a ferry to Manly, take one to the Zoo or the north shores because the views from a ferry are pretty unbeatable. As soon as you get off the ferry and start heading towards the ocean, for a good 5 blocks, you are surrounded by suvie shops, ice cream and dessert parlors, surf rental desks, street performers, etc. All the things you'd expect from a tourist centered area. We managed to escape with a single purchase of a beach towel (we didn't pack towels because we traveled to Australia with carry-ons!! I know, more on that in the coming weeks) and made our way to the golden yellow sand. Simply put, Manly was beautiful. We claimed an area on the beach and decided to jump in with our GoPro! It was freezing cold but so refreshing since the temps had reached nearly 90 that day. Between body surfing and swimming against the tide to stay close to our belongings, we worked up an appetite. We dried off and walked a bit to get to a place I had researched, The Pantry. For a restaurant literally on the beach, we felt the atmosphere was a bit formal. They were nice enough to seat us and we enjoyed some Sydney beer along with our fish and chips. We gallivanted around the town's boutiques and shops before deciding we were ready to catch the ferry back. As beautiful as Manly was, we felt it was a little stiff. We were expecting laid-back surfer vibes but as we explored, we realized the people staying there were swapping their denim shorts and flip-flops for evening dresses and heels. The day was still young so we thought we'd return to Sydney and spend some time in our neighborhood. Plus, our return views of the Opera House are some of my favorites from the whole trip! If Sydney wasn't half a world away, I think Chase and I might consider visiting more frequently! We felt at home there, and that's difficult when you love where you live. But it's true, Sydney is everything they said it would be and we've only shown you the beaches! The opera house, the harbor, and a city tour is next up!
Until Next Time, C + D
