Continuing our trip through South America, we traveled to Iguazu Falls which separates Argentina from Brazil. It was truly more incredible than we even thought possible. South America just kept surprising us with it's spectacular beauty. When we first booked our trip to South America, we knew little about Iguazu (Iguaçu in Brazilian) falls. Like we do with every trip, we began researching our stops and quickly became excited about not only seeing a Natural Wonder of the World but also experiencing more than 275 waterfalls in one stop! Our excursions through the national parks were split between two days. The first day, in Iguaçu National Park in Brazil and the second in Argentina's park. Argentina contains roughly 80% of the falls, so the view from the Brazilian side was much more grand and picturesque looking across at the Argentinian boarder. The second day was the real adventure in that we spent the day walking from lookout to lookout viewing the falls directly over the water's edge. Day 1 - Brazilian Side The last picture above is of the little critter, coatimundi. It's South America's raccoon and they are vicious! Traveler beware, don't feed them or let them know you have food, they will attack you for it. We watched a family of these creatures chase a girl for a pack of cigarettes! And the coatimundi won! Day 2 - Argentinian Side The water was very different from day one to day two. The first day we were at the falls, it had rained all day so by the second day, the red soil had been stirred and gave the falls a very vivid orange color. Our tour guide told us it was the most red she'd ever seen it. Our favorite spot was the U-shaped crest called Devil's throat. It was a two-mile walk on a gangplank over the river to see it, but beyond worth it! Other than the falls, we spent some time in the city of Puerto Iguazú, Argentina. It was the main town that tourists stayed in if they were spending more than one day at the falls. There were several wonderful places to eat, cute cafés to grab a cup of coffee, and several shops for souvenirs. We hit up a hippie market on the outskirts of town and bought some great locally-made artisan jewelry for keepsakes and gifts.
If you've been wanting to see some amazing waterfalls, add Iguazu to your list. When Eleanor Roosevelt visited here, she exclaimed "Poor Niagara!" at the sight of these magnificent falls! Until Next Time, C + D
