Our travel friends sent us an email to join them on their 2014 adventure and we decided the deal was too sweet to pass up. So almost one year ago, we embarked on a week long adventure to the mystical land of Iceland. The potential to see geysers, glaciers, waterfalls, and the Aurora Borealis in one trip seemed like a dream. All of that, plus a week with our friends made it a trip we couldn't skip. Unfortunately, the lights didn't show while we were there, so we should definitely start planning another Scandinavian adventure soon! During our stay in Reykjavik, we hit up the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa in the middle of nowhere. It's about 45 minutes from the capital city and surrounded by the natural mossy landscape that is Iceland. Our skin has never felt so good and I'm convinced my hair has grown at rapid speed since visiting. Walking around the city, we explored all the small alleyways that wind down to the harbor and the Harpa, their massive opera house right on the water. Reykjavik is the capital and home to about 40% of the Icelandic population. We also took a city tour through Reykjavik and got to check out all the famous spots like the hallgrímskirkja church, the höfdi where Reegan and Gorbachev ended the Cold War, the Perlan (great views of the city) and the Ásmundarsafn sculpture garden. Our tour guide also took us on a quick drive by past Björk's house! Our friends rented a car and allowed us to tag along for a day drive around the Icelandic countryside. We saw everything from waterfalls to sunken volcanoes to wildlife on the side of the road and the geyser that named all other geysers. Our amazing friend, Rob, navigated the whole day and managed to keep going even after everyone else in the car fell asleep. The last major activity was a glacier hike. We strapped on some crampons and headed for the glacier known as Sólheimajökull. We mastered ice climbing, found some sink holes, and watched the Icelandic Search and Rescue team train on a giant ice wall. Our tour guides were proud Icelandians and their stories to and from the ice sheet, gave us insight to how much they love their home land. It was so inspiring to see these young dudes have so much patriotism. Iceland is far from the typical Europe destination, but we are so happy it was our first. As such an interesting place, full of history and rich folklore, Iceland rivals in other European countries with reasons to visit and has started a love affair for us with everything Scandinavian. Until Next Time,
