For our Iceland trip, we had airfare that got us from NYC to Iceland and back but we had to cover the airfare from Austin to NYC. Since we are both huge fans of the city, we decided to tack on some extra days at the end of the trip and spend it exploring Manhattan. We landed back in the United States at JFK on a Monday evening in early November. Although we were jet lagged and exhausted, we headed to dinner with an old family friend and couldn't have been more excited to be in New York City. Manhattan is one of those places that has almost too many things to do! There's never enough time to get to every neighborhood's restaurant, shop, cafe, museum, etc. This was my 4th trip in the city and Chase's second and there are still a few things on our must-do list for next time. Especially since our Brooklyn friends gave us a HUGE list of restaurants that we have to try! *To avoid being complete tourists, we took all these photos on our iPhones. Bare in mind, quality might not be highest of standards* Where we stayed: This time, we stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel (thanks to a ridiculous deal from living social) which was a block from Grand Central Station. During previous visits, I've stayed at Harold Square hotel, a few blocks closer to the flat iron building and another hotel closer to Rockefeller Center. The Roosevelt hotel was really wonderful. We had a huge room and bathroom and the location was so convenient. We were also offered a private car to the airport which rocked and we didn't have the hassle of a crazy taxi driver speeding through town. Getting around: Since we were a block from Grand Central, we took advantage of the metro and used it for the three days we were there. NYC has amazing public transit and the subway is just too easy not to use. We went from Washington Park at NYU for breakfast all the way up to Carnegie Hill for some Shake Shack burgers for lunch. The subway system in Manhattan makes me so envious of New Yorkers! Favorite spots: Visiting New York this last time was much different than ever before. In previous years, I was in high school and college. Living on a budget (or off my parents still) meant not doing all the things I wanted to. Plus, the lack of life experiences made me more nervous to venture into an unfamiliar part of New York City. But this trip was our first "adult" trip in New York. We didn't feel limited or anxious and took advantage of that! We took off to explore NYU, Washington Park, SoHo, the World Trade Center area and Carrie Bradshaw's stoop!! We headed north to see the Flat Iron building, Union Square, and the Empire State Building. We strolled along Park Ave and the upper east side. Then we headed to Central Park and did some people watching at MoMA and the Guggenheim. As the sun set, we hung out on the rocks to take in the NYC skyline. We also stumbled upon Times Square as we were heading to Broadway to see Les Mis. Just thinking about it makes me want to fly back and visit! We love New York! Food: Again, since this was our first time in New York as working adults, we decided to go all out! Diet was out the window! Finally loving coffee, we went to a couple coffee houses and Third Rail down by Washington Park was adorable and delicious. Our first dinner in the city was with a friend that took us to The Smith and their Chicken Pot Pie was on point. We hit up shake shack, a New York staple, for some delicious burgers. We asked a police officer for pizza recommendations and he did not disappoint! Serendipity was a must for some HUGE frozen hot chocolates (they won't let you share so we ordered two), visited Ladurée for their French macaroons, and our Brooklyn friends told us we had to go to Juniors for cheesecake. I now dream about it so thanks for that, guys! Next time, we plan on hitting up more farm to table spots as well as more coffee joints! If you've visited and have a favorite place, comment below and give us the deets!
Until Next Time, C + D
