John F. Kennedy Airport is in Jamaica, NY which happens to share space with Queens and Brooklyn. There were probably closer places to stay than Bushwick but we found a clean and cheap Airbnb and decided to keep our day layover to Brooklyn. When we booked our Africa flights with Kenyan Air, the flight left JFK at 10am. Instead of risking any kind of delay or security check hiccups, we flew into NY the day before and decided to just hang around Brooklyn for a Sunday. When it comes to long haul air travel, we always play it safe. Our wonderful friend Kim happens to live in Brooklyn so we planned to meet up for lunch. Well, Kim decided to volunteer her morning by picking us up, going to lunch with us and then driving us over to our Airbnb. - Kim, you are a saint! Thank you! Miss you! - We had lunch at Pio Pio, a Peruvian restaurant that Kim and her sister raved about when we were in Sydney (to prevent confusion, Pio Pio is only located in NY, we didn’t have it in Sydney but we tend to talk about food, like, all the time when we’re together). Pio Pio seemed perfect to have for the first time with Kim! Shortly after our check in at the Airbnb, we grabbed our umbrellas and set off for some coffee. Kim recommended Hungry Ghost, which was just a few blocks away. We grabbed a couple cappuccinos and dried off... New York was not having the best weather that day. Although we had just eaten roughly 90 minutes before, we wanted Junior’s cheesecake. Nothing like pigging out the day before a week on the beach! We strolled a bit through the cute Brooklyn streets before making our way to Junior’s. Yum! This cheesecake! Totally worth the calories, y’all. After a sugar pick-me-up, we took off for a bridge photo op in Dumbo. Considering the rain, there were still crowds so we stopped a block early and got some photos without people running through our shot. A solo traveler asked if we could take photos of him and he offered the same for us, so we managed to get a cute photo sans selfie! After Dumbo, we headed closer to the East river to get a better view of the Brooklyn Bridge. Lower Manhattan is so beautiful from this vantage point (check out the cover photo!). We were so glad we decided to do this walk and not let the rain ruin the day. That evening, we grabbed a ride over to the William Vale Hotel for cocktails at Westlight. Dani had made reservations about a month before we arrived and had no problem getting a table booked. The views at this rooftop lounge are supposed to be incredible but on that particular night, the clouds and haze made it hard to have a clear shot of Manhattan. Ya win some, ya lose some. The hostess gave us an incredible table right by the window and we ordered a round of drinks with a few bites. Luckily we weren’t starving because the prices were steep. It is Williamsburg, afterall. We ended the night with a glass of port before asking for our bill. We weren't feeling any desserts at Westlight so we got a ride over to Milk Bar, which at 10:30pm, you think they'd be pretty slow... No, the line was out the door! Dani got the Cereal Milk Soft Serve and Chase got the same but with fudge on it. We also got a compost cookie to go (which we ate about two weeks later in Africa and it was amazing!). The next morning, we walked a few blocks down to BK Bagels for breakfast and a coffee before getting an Uber for the airport. This was our first time going to New York and not visiting Manhattan. Only having a single day, it was actually nice to avoid the city. Traffic isn’t any less hectic in Brooklyn but it felt different. It was a tad calmer and the sense of urgency just wasn’t there. We kinda loved it. (Have no fear, Dani is headed to Manhattan in October with a girlfriend and they plan to do all the things! I ❤️ NY)
Until Next Time, C + D
