Headed to Portland soon? If you are looking for some good eats in a city well known for its food scene, consider some of our favorite places that we discovered on our visit there last year.Hey y'all! It's been a while... sorry about that! We took two rather long trips in the final quarter of 2016 so it was hard enough just staying on top of work and "adulting". But it's 2017 and we are picking up where we left off with a Portland food guide. Also, if you missed our post about PDX, find it here: Portland has so much good food... that's it. Period. Paragraph. Believe it or not, there is more to Portland than craft breweries and VooDoo Doughnuts! Residents keep up on the new chefs and restaurants popping up in the hottest pockets of Portlandia so we were eager to head there with a list of places to try. Below are some highlights from the food scene we enjoyed. Breakfast. The most important meal of the day: Screen Door - Think southern comfort food. Located on E Burnside Rd. (which splits the city into the north and south) the interior is warm and cozy with jars of pickled veggies scattered around for decoration! Order up some fresh squeezed OJ because it's pretty great. We got their glazed breakfast hushpuppies for starters and then went right for their famous chicken and waffles! There's a reason they are famous. Gravy - Can you guess what this Mississippi St. brunch spot does well? Their Biscuits and Gravy were, obviously, awesome! I wasn't feeling something so heavy the day we went so I got oatmeal but Chase let me take a few bites from his plate. The line here was ridiculous! We were going on a bike tour at 9am so we were one of their first tables right when they opened at 7:30am but by the time we left, the place was completely packed with a line out the door! They don't take reservations so plan to get up early or wait in line... whatever. Donuts, y'all! I'm including them here because I think most identify donuts with breakfast. I mean, I could go for them any time of the day but I'll conform. Blue Star Donuts + Coffee - nicknamed "donuts for grown ups" because of their sophisticated recipe favors such as blueberry bourbon basil, valrhona chocolate crunch, and passionfruit cocoa nib. They do gourmet donuts well but if you aren't feeling adventurous, rest easy. They do make a few basic favors like their OG, a traditional glaze over brioche or the cinnamon sugar. They have 7 locations in Portland so no matter where you stay, you shouldn't be too far from one. VooDoo Doughnut - if the kids (or you) weren't up for a matcha green tea cake donut, head over to VooDoo because they couldn't be more opposite from Blue Star. Probably one of the most famous spots in Portland, VooDoo doughnut doesn't do gourmet, they do deep fried, glazed, and indulgent. Traditional yeast donuts covered in cinnamon sugar, topped with chocolate glaze, or filled with Bavarian cream are all available but if you were looking for something a little... crazier, they have that too. Choose one topped with cereal, like fruit loops and captain crunch, with Oreos and peanut butter, chocolate and M&Ms, or maple and full pieces of bacon. They have locations on the east and west side of town but be prepared to stand in line. Oh and have cash, they don't take cards! Lunch and Dinner. Tasty n Alder - this place made almost every foodie list we looked at so we knew we wanted to try it. Located in the downtown district, we stopped for a late lunch during the mid-day menu (bar setting for 21+) and took advantage of their killer happy hour cocktails. I ordered the Alder mini slider while Chase got the steakhouse sandwich and we split an order of the fries with washimi wagyu tallow. For dessert, we went with the panna cotta with whiskey caramel. The whole experience was great. The staff, the setting, the food. Very glad we were able to make it there! Ecliptic Brewery - With over 50 in the city, some craft breweries are trying to draw people in with food. It seems to be working, too. After venturing down Mississippi St, we stopped and had lunch here while partaking in a beer tasting. We were big fans of both. Some of our favorite beers were brewing here and we fell in love with their saison. Bamboo Sushi - We were told about this place while we were shopping up in Nob Hill. The store owner seemed trustworthy enough that we gave it a shot for dinner (not open for lunch) and we're glad we did! We ventured to the NE Alberda St location and snagged a table in the back corner. The decor was cozy and the wait staff was helpful and kind. I think we did four rounds of sushi (with 4 people) and just a couple rounds of sake! This was another popular joint in Portland. By the time we left, there was a line and all the tables were filled. Sweets. Salt & Straw - Fresh and unique ice cream that you shouldn't say no to! They make their cones in house and the favors are so creative, you want to try them all. Any time Lavender is on the menu I have to get it so I got a waffle cone with two scoops of Honey Lavender while Chase ordered the freckled Woodblock chocolate. Other flavor options include pear & blue cheese, olive oil, and Oregon black truffle (sounds so good). We went to the 23rd Ave location but they have three other shops in Portland as well as locations in LA and SF (they also popped up here in the ATX for SXSW!). For Next Time:
Our AirBnB host as well as Justin, the shop owner, told us about so many places but we just couldn't get to them all! Two places we really wish we could have tried are Bollywood Theater and Pok Pok (this miss HAUNTS me!). If there are any spots you loved in Portland that didn't make our list, let us know (other than coffee and breweries... those weren't mentioned because that post is coming next)! We've been told Pok Pok is reason enough to book a trip back to PDX! Until Next Time, C + D
