When we weren't sunbathing at the beaches, we were exploring the harbour, the city center, and the culture throughout Sydney's diverse neighborhoods. When we began planning this trip, we knew we wanted to start in Sydney but we weren't sure from where we'd fly home. Well, that decision was made for us when we realized one-way flights were twice as expensive as round trip. Meaning, it would be cheaper to fly in and out of Sydney (even after adding another domestic flight back to Sydney) then trying to fly into Sydney and out of a different city, like Cairns, for instance. So with that in mind, we decided to split our time there. The first 4 and the last 3 days of the trip were spent in Sydney. For the first 4 full days, we stayed in a lovely AirBnB in the Darlinghurst neighborhood. Located on the south side of Sydney, Darlinghurst was filled with awesome coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs. Our apartment was about 3 blocks from King's Cross, which is the equivalent to Bourbon street in New Orleans. Considering our proximity to crazy nightlife, it was extremely quiet and calm. We loved this charming neighborhood!!! If you had the chance to read our first post about Australia, we mentioned that we spent the first day on the beach in Bondi and the third day on Manly. If you haven't read it, check it out here: After a day of relaxing, we crammed A LOT into the second day. It happened to fall on a Sunday so the morning was spent at Hillsong Church. If you're unfamiliar with Hillsong Church or their worship group, Hillsong United, google it. The church, what they stand for, and their growth is amazing! The main campus is about 45 minutes outside of Sydney so we got an Über and visited a city site. It was incredible. After church, we took the metro into Circular Quay to see the Sydney Harbour. The two pictures below were taken at in the same spot. To the left, the Harbour Bridge and a half turn to the right was the Opera House. So beautiful! We were fortunate enough to see a show at the opera house! During the month of October, My Fair Lady was playing and it was great. It was directed by Julie Andrews so the acting was fabulous and so funny. We were kind of in awe the whole time because the inside of the Opera house was just as amazing as the outside. After the show, we went outside and walked around to the front of the opera house. The sun was just getting ready to set so we snapped a few photos around the harbour and headed back to the metro. We were ready for some comfy clothes and dinner. We finally caught up with our travel friends on the 4th day (they flew in a couple days behind us... because schedules!). After breakfast, we met them on the stairs of the Pylon lookout for hugs and catching up before climbing to the top to take in the views. We quickly parted ways as they were wanting to explore the beaches and we wanted to see the city. We headed to the Rocks, an old, or original, part of Sydney. The roads were cobblestone and the back alleys were just wide enough for a horse and buggy, I'm assuming. It was a step back in time regardless of the concrete jungle lurking around it. From there, we walked up to Observatory hill, over to the Royal Botanic Gardens, through the city, down to Hyde Park, and up to the Anzac memorial before heading to our apt. about 10 blocks away (that was our actual walking path... don't look at a map, it'll only confuse you and make you realize there's NO method to our madness). That evening, we walked across the harbour bridge to the north side of Sydney for dinner. Afterwards, we got some night pictures of the harbor (see cover photo) and stared strangely at Luna Park while we waited for the ferry to take us back to the Quay. If you made it this far, Thanks for reading! Our first four days in Sydney were fantastic! We were busy bees and managed to walk about 7 miles a day (even while taking the metro) but it was worth it to see everything on our list.
Until Next Time, C + D
