Learning, Growing, and Trying to Find a New NormalHey y’all! So we know it’s been a while since anything new has been added on here. We don’t have to tell you that since our last post, the world flipped on it’s head. There was so much momentum and learning going on, we felt our voices did not need to be heard. We took time in our personal lives to learn, read, support and must importantly listen. We’re still doing this and will continue to but we are also ready to return to talking about travel. With that being said, if you only have time to read one blog today, we hope it’s one covering institutional racism, or police reform or Supreme Court rulings. But if you need a break from the heavy, we’re chatting about Kenya. We covered the first two days of our safari on this post talking about Lake Elmentaita. After we left the Great Rift Valley, we headed southwest to spend the next few days in the Masai Mara National Reserve. We participated in five game drives and added on a hot air balloon excursion (that’s coming in a separate post... too many pictures to share here) to round out a beautiful three days on the reserve. We stayed at the Mara Leisure Camp. The property is located inside the national reserve and was on the edge of the Mara River. Our suite was inside a luxury tent and when the gave us our room key they told us we had to keep the room locked (by zipping the door closed and padlocking the pulls together) to insure the monkeys wouldn’t come in! That was our biggest worry the whole trip... My, how things have changed in a year. We were fortunate enough to see so many beautiful animals and landscapes. 4/5 “Big Five” were found, our guides were reaching out to other camps for information on a rhinoceros spotting but no guides in the Mara had seen one in over a week. The sad reality of this species barely existing in the wild... we were hopeful but the odds were against us. We’re just gonna keep the train rolling here; our drives were peaceful and reflective. Instead of interjecting with dialogue, we’re just gonna post some of our favorite photos and try to recreate that feeling. Each morning, besides the day we did the hot air balloon ride, we were treated to breakfast (with unlimited Kenyan coffee) and then went on a 2-3hr game drive. Following the drive, we’d return to the lodge and have lunch and a couple hours to hang in the lounge, at the pool, in our room, etc. Then that evening, we’d go back out for another drive. Both evening drives ended with us leaving the park right at sunset. On our last night, Chase and I sat by the campfire and reflected on our experiences in Africa. It’s such a magical place. We hope to return one day and explore the Serengeti side in Tanzania.
Until Next Time, C + D
