The island of La Digue happens to house a beach that has been used for desktop screensavers, featured in movies like Castaway, and voted the most beautiful beach in the world by travelers and critics alike. Anse Source d’Argent, aptly named the source of money bay, is the only beach you have to pay to access but it's totally worth the $8.Sooo, I was planning to do the entire island of La Digue in one blog post but quickly decided I just couldn't trim down the photos I wanted to use from Anse Source d'Argent. To be fair, we did visit this beach twice, once at sunrise and again at sunset, so there are twice as many pictures from this one spot. That makes it justifiable, right?! Anyway, our first morning on La Digue was a 4:30am wake up call to bike over to the Union Estate. The gates open at 6am and we were the first ones through them. We parked our bikes by the kayak rental huts (which were still closed when we left two hours later... island time people!) and walked the 20ft to the beach. As we were heading in, the sky was pink and orange from sunrise. We snaked along the path, walking under massive boulders with palm trees growing around them. The tide was exceptionally low and the calm water made the visit so peaceful that morning. The only other way to get to Anse Source d’Argent is to walk/swim from the the beach just north of the bay. It's doable in low tide but honestly, the entrance fee at the Union Estate goes to maintain the beach, the plantation and the exhibits they have around the grounds. We were there for about 15 minutes when we saw a group of 3 come swimming around the rocks. They were there for about 20 minutes and then left?... We exchanged cameras for photos and then didn't seem them again. Super weird but we got a great photo out of the encounter and then we had the place to ourselves. We climbed on top of rocks, took lots of photos of the beach and the bay, and caught ourselves saying, "Wow, it's so beautiful here" like 37 times. We decided we were hungry and ready for breakfast so around 8am, we made our way back to our bikes and then towards the main entrance. We passed about 10 people heading down to the beach and when we got to the exit, there was a line of about 30 waiting to pay/get in. We had read Anse Source d’Argent would be the most crowded beach, no matter what season you visit. It was absolutely worth the early morning to see the beach empty. After breakfast, we did a beach tour on the east side of the island but knew we wanted to see the sun set on Anse Source d’Argent. In the late afternoon, we retreated to our hotel, changed our clothes and then passed back through Union Estate's entrance gate for sunset (and from there we went to dinner, hence the hotel pitstop). Somehow, we managed, again, to have the beach to ourselves... We passed many people and couldn't figure out why everyone was leaving before the sky fired. There were some storm clouds brewing, that was the only reason we could come up with. It was an incredibly beautiful day, from start to finish. They've coined it the most beautiful beach in the world and in those moments on that beach, it was easy to see why.
La Digue as a whole, is one of the most beautiful islands we've ever spent time on. We can't wait to show you the rest of this incredible place. Until Next Time, C + D
