The opportunity presented itself through an email alert about cheap flights to Honolulu. Cheap flights to Hawaii? Is that a thing? Yes, yes it is and we decided the prices were too good to pass up so we booked the flights and began planning our week in O’ahu.Back in March ‘18, just two weeks before we left for Japan I received an email about a flight deal to Hawaii. The email read something like this: “From now until June and again in the fall, United is having a crazy deal on flights to Honolulu...”. I was interested and as much as I dislike United, I was curious to see just how good this deal was. I went to Kayak.com and searched AUS to HNL, settling on two green dot (indicating a great day to fly based on prices) days spaced a week apart. Ten seconds later I got my answer: $246, round trip from Austin to Honolulu with a plane change (and a 3 hour layover) in Houston, United’s hub. I yelled to Chase, “$250 flights to Hawaii in October, I’m booking it!” With our upcoming trip to Tokyo and Kyoto, we put all planning for Hawaii on the back burner. When we finally started to create an itinerary, we found out that not only were the flights a steal but the accommodations were also at a great price point. We booked a condo two blocks from Waikiki beach that came with free parking for our rental car. It was shaping up to be a great week. We had a lot of friends and family members ask us if we were going to island hop. Others asked if we were going to do surf lessons... swim with sharks... do a helicopter tour. To be honest, after all the planning we did for Japan (as well as a few smaller trips we took in 2017), we really wanted to chill. We knew we wanted to hike and explore several beaches but for this particular visit, keeping a relatively relaxed schedule and not leaving O’ahu sounded the most appealing to us. That might seem boring or a waste of a trip on such an adventurous island but at the end of our eight day stay, we swam at 10 beaches, hiked 3 different trails, took in 7 sunsets, visited every region of O’ahu and fully embraced all the delicious local Hawaiian food! It was exactly what we needed. Adventurous with a heavy focus on relaxation! In the coming weeks, we’ve got detailed posts about all of these previously mentioned adventures but for now, y’all have to get on some mailing lists for travel deals! Condé Nast Traveler and Google Flights are great places to start. Until Next Time, C + D
