When Chase was trying to figure out where he wanted to celebrate his thirtieth, he kept going back to Japan. We looked into flight deals and surprisingly, we found some incredible rates, in April to boot, and just felt like it was meant to be! So, to Japan we went. When Chase settled on Japan, we were both so excited that we'd be there during their Cherry Blossom season! With Chase's birthday falling at the end of March, we decided to wait one more week and spend the first 2 weeks of April in Japan along with Chase's brother, Quinn. We had an AM flight out of LAX on April 1 and we landed the next day (because of the international dateline) around 2:00pm. We got our metro passes and a JR ticket for Tokyo and made our way into the city. By the time we settled in and freshened up, we were all hungry so we headed back to the metro, just a block from our Airbnb, to go north to Omoide-yokochō for some yakitori. But not before grabbing an eight layer ice cream cone!! You could taste every flavor and it was amazing! Our first glance at Cherry Blossoms was right outside the mall that housed the ice cream shop! We instantly got so excited to hunt for the remaining Cherry blossoms (the trees peaked about 10 Days earlier than estimated)! After our pre-dinner snack, we went to Omoide-yokochō or as some call it, piss alley. Omoide-yokochō is an alleyway filled with food stalls all serving yakitori, veggie/meat skewers. Most of the stalls have less than 10 seats so we strolled until we found a group getting up and we snagged their seats. The yakitori was great! We ordered a few bowls of vegetables and chicken skewers as well as some saké. Experiencing omoide-yokochō was so cool. It was exactly what we had imagined when we pictured Tokyo alleyways. After dinner, we walked to Kabukichō. Kabukichō is Tokyo's red light district. However, being in Japan during blossom season, there were so many tourists that it didn't feel "sketchy" as we had read it would be. We wandered around before making our way to a karaoke bar! Well, more like a karaoke building... They had over a dozen floors of karaoke rooms. We got a seventh floor, street view room for 30 minutes... which was not long enough for all the songs we had cued! It was super easy to work the computer system and the waiters were friendly and helpful! It was such a blast! Our first night in Tokyo was awesome! We weren't sure how much we'd be up for after 16 hours of traveling but we managed to see a lot on our list. The next couple of days were spent with coffee in the morning followed by lots of siteseeing/looking at cherry blossoms and temples but more on that soon!
Until Next Time, C + D
